The impetus for this poster began as a poster series I developed revolving 2020's films illustrated in the midcentury/golden-age style of cinema posters. The rules were simple: 1) Movies selected must have a subject matter that directly pertained to our modern age (phones, the internet, etc.) and 2) Each movie must be no more than 10 years old. For the first entry, I chose to design a pulpy, kitschy noir style poster for one of my favorites of the decade, M. Night Shyamalan's 'Trap.'
The tenants I focused on consisted of elements of intense chiarascuro (heavy shadows and black blacks) and strong silhouettes that instill a kind of fearfulness in the piece. Playing with the genre's typographical and graphic design elements was a lot of fun and taught me so much more than I thought I could learn. I greatly recommend The Art of Noir: The Posters and Graphics from the Classic Era of Film Noir by Eddie Muller for further reading!
