Your Laura Disappeared
This piece was painted for a Twin Peaks themed lobby art show at the Frida Cinema as a tribute to the late, great David Lynch. I hold a deep emotional attachment to the story of Laura Palmer, with Fire Walk with Me being my absolute favorite of Lynch’s films. My intent with this poster was to convey visually what I could not put into words; Badalamenti’s tragic and haunting score, the interstitial shots of the Pacific Northwest’s foggy mountains laden with Douglas Firs, and the transcendental empathy Lynch held for a girl burdened by the evil of man.
Compositionally, I drew from the themes of Blue Velvet and its opening scene, where the subtext of a picturesque community’s dark underbelly is framed literally. Placing Laura Palmer’s resting body underneath the roads entering the town felt like the right way to depict the core intrigue of Twin Peaks while not yet giving everything away. Glimpses of the red room floor, Laura’s diary, and the green ring are only symbols to be deciphered, while atop her are the unforgiving dreary forests of the idiosyncratic town.
